RICHARD WHADCOCK

Richard Whadcock (b. 1967, Birmingham) is a British painter known for large atmospheric landscapes inspired by the South Downs and the East Sussex coast. His work distils shifting weather, light and distance into pared-back fields of tone, often hovering between abstraction and place.

  • He studied Fine Art at Bristol Art College from 1986 to 1989, then completed an MA in Printmaking at the Royal College of Art in 1991. The discipline of printmaking, particularly lithography, informs his painting through prepared surfaces, controlled layering and the removal of anything non-essential to the image. He is based in Brighton, with an early studio at Phoenix Brighton, and has undertaken residencies including Lowick House Print Workshop in Cumbria and Cill Rialaig in County Kerry. Recent solo shows include Between Echoes at K. Imperial Fine Art, San Francisco 2025, On Distant Shores at Studio Gallery, Australia 2023, Just Now at Gallery At Home 2023, and Borrowed Light at Cadogan Gallery, London 2022. Group highlights include the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2015 and 2016. His work is held in private collections in the UK and internationally.

  • Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo 2020
A luminous, finely structured Barolo with dried rose, red cherry, subtle anise and cedar. Fine-grained tannins carry a long, mineral finish.

Why it pairs with Richard Whadcock
Whadcock’s Turner-esque atmospheres dwell in light, weather and distance. This Barolo opens with perfume, then gathers depth in translucent layers, finishing with poised, horizon-line clarity.
